Makita cordless drill battery packs contain rechargeable nickel cadmium batteries. The battery pack recharges fully many times and then may only recharge partially. This is an indicator that the batteries need replacing. It is much less expensive to replace the individual batteries in the pack than to purchase a new one. Makita packs are a solid one-piece construction without screws to hold them together.
Insert a chisel tip into a soldering iron. Plug the soldering iron power cord into an electrical outlet and wait for it to heat. Most soldering irons have a steady red light when they are ready for use.
Place the Makita 1051DWD battery pack on a table covered with newspaper with the large end down. Place the chisel tip on the battery pack side just below the top of the large bottom portion. As the tip heats the plastic, it will form a line. Move the chisel tip around the pack horizontally to melt an opening around the entire pack.
Grasp the top small end of the Makita 193157-5 battery pack and lift it off the bottom portion that you cut through. Pull the top portion of the pack off to reveal a bottom and top layer of 12 nickel cadmium batteries.
Draw a diagram of each layer of wiring connecting the batteries together before removing the wires. Follow the diagram to replace each battery's wires in the correct order.
Glue the case back together with clear silicone glue. This type of glue is waterproof to keep the METABO BSZ 14.4 batteries dry and allows the pack to be cut open again through the glue.
